Q: What type of PDA do I need? A: You can use any PDA which has a Palm OS version 3.5 or higher. This includes most PDAs made by Palm since 1999.
Q: Does Dataforensics software operate on Pocket PCs? A: Not at this time. However, we have developed a version of PLog for the Tablet/Laptop work environment.
Q: What type of PDA do you recommend? A: We are currently recommending the Meazura™ Ruggedized Digital Assistant because of its: price, long battery life and screen which can be read in direct sunlight.
Q: How does the PDA perform in field conditions? A: The Meazura™ Ruggedized Digital Assistant is a ruggedized PDA that is developed specifically for working outdoors. It is water and dirt proof. We do recommend purchasing the 3-pack of screen protectors to help protect the screen.
Q: Can I download GPS coordinates to the PDA? A: Yes – you can hard wire any NMEA compliant GPS unit to your PDA and download coordinates directly to PLog or PDensity.
Q: How much memory does a program require to load and run? A: The amount of memory each program requires varies. The memory requirements for each program alone are as follows. PLog – 400K PDensity – 99K PWell – 100K The more data you have stored in the program, the more memory is required for the program. Dataforensics estimates PLog can hold about 3,000 linear feet of boring information before running into memory problems on an 8 MB PDA. The Meazura™ Ruggedized Digital Assistant has 16 MB. PDAs sold by Palm today have at least 32 MB.
Q: Do you have a trial version I can download? A: No. We do not offer a trial version. Instead we offer a live demonstration of our software. It is performed online and can be set at a time which best fits your schedule.
Q: How much does the software cost? A: Please click here to see a list of prices.
Q: Do you offer volume discounts? A: Yes. Volume discounts are available for orders of 10 or more software licences.
Q: Can your software collect data in metric units? A: The software can collect data in Imperial or metric units.
Q: What costs are covered under the 60-day free trial? A: If you try any of our software, do not like it, and return it within 60 days, you receive your PDA licence fee back and any Platinum Support you ordered. We cannot return the costs of the correspondence fee and do not accept hardware returns.
Q: Can you beam project information from one PDA to another? A: No, not at this time. This is because if one technician HotSyncs the PDA with the project information, and then a second technician with the same (and more) info HotSyncs their PDA, it is not known which data is correct? It is advised to treat the PDA like a worksheet. The technician leaving a site would likely leave their data worksheets with the new technician. With this in mind, the technicians can swap PDAs and have the information they need to continue the project.
Q: Can I HotSync multiple PDAs to one computer? A: Yes. Each PDA must have a unique user’s name.
Q: Something is wrong with my PDA. Can I return it to you for a new one? A: If you purchased a Meazura™ Ruggedized Digital Assistant, contact us and we will see if it falls within the return guidelines. We can also help perform some troubleshooting. If you purchased any other type of PDA unit, you must contact the original manufacturer. Refer to Palm Support to troubleshoot your problem and decide if a repair is necessary or possible.
Q: I have HotSynced my PDA to my PC. The HotSync completed, but my data is not in PLog. Why is PLog not working? A: Click the HotSync icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the PC by the clock) and select the Custom option. If you see the PLog Conduit in the list, then double click the PLog Conduit option. Change the conduit setting to Handheld Overwrites Desktop and then click done. HotSync the PDA again and see if you data uploaded. If you don’t see the PLog Conduit in the list PLog is not installed on your PC or you have reinstalled Palm Desktop. You will need to reinstall the PLog Client application on your PC. Q: I see my data in the PC module for PLog or PDensity, but the data is not in gINT. How do I get it there? A: Dataforensics’ software is independent of gINT. HotSyncing the PDA to your computer does not automatically send your data to gINT. You must open the PC Configuration tool for PLog or PDensity and select the project you want to transfer to gINT. A dialogue box will open where you choose the gINT library, data template, project and correspondence file you need to complete the data transfer. Once these items are defined you select “Okay” and the data is transferred to gINT.
